Pam Bondi Pledges Fairness and DOJ Reform in Attorney General Confirmation Hearing

NewsPam Bondi Pledges Fairness and DOJ Reform in Attorney General Confirmation Hearing

Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. attorney general, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, promising to restore trust and fairness in the Department of Justice (DOJ). Bondi, who previously served as Florida’s attorney general and was part of Trump’s impeachment defense team, vowed to end what she described as political bias in the DOJ and to focus on reducing crime.

In her testimony, Bondi assured lawmakers that under her leadership, the DOJ would be free of partisanship. She emphasized her commitment to ensuring justice for everyone and stated there would be no “enemies list” in the department. Bondi also criticized investigations into Trump during the Biden administration, calling them politically motivated. “I will fight every day to restore confidence and integrity to the Department of Justice,” she said.

Democratic senators questioned whether Bondi could act independently of Trump. Senator Dick Durbin asked if she accepted the results of the 2020 election and whether she would resist any pressure from Trump to investigate his opponents. Bondi acknowledged the peaceful transfer of power in 2021 but focused on Trump’s recent 2024 election victory. On the topic of possible pardons for January 6 Capitol rioters, Bondi said she would review cases individually and condemned violence against law enforcement.

Republican senators largely praised Bondi, highlighting her extensive legal experience and dedication to public safety. They argued that her leadership would refocus the DOJ on fighting crime and reducing recidivism. Bondi described her goals as getting “back to basics” by prioritizing justice and ensuring that laws are applied equally.

Despite her assurances, Democrats voiced concerns about Bondi’s ties to Trump and her ability to remain impartial. They pressed her on whether she would investigate Trump’s critics, such as Liz Cheney and Jack Smith, the special counsel who led investigations into Trump. Bondi avoided giving direct answers and instead shifted the discussion to issues like rising crime rates.

Bondi also defended her past actions, including her work during Trump’s first impeachment trial and her challenges to the 2020 election results in Pennsylvania. She maintained that her efforts were focused on ensuring election fairness and integrity.

The hearing also touched on issues like government surveillance. Bondi called Section 702, a surveillance program, an important tool for national security but said she would review its use to ensure it is handled responsibly.

Bondi’s confirmation is expected to pass in the Republican-controlled Senate. However, her close ties to Trump and past actions have sparked debates about whether she can maintain the DOJ’s independence. Critics worry her leadership could prioritize loyalty to Trump over the impartial application of justice.

If confirmed, Bondi will oversee the DOJ and its many agencies, including the FBI and ATF. She will also be responsible for implementing Trump’s policies and managing investigations involving the president and his allies. Her ability to lead with fairness and integrity will be key as she takes on this significant role.
