Downing announces SAFE & Senior SAFE grant awards to 8 local fire departments
December 18, 2014

PITTSFIELD – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D- Pittsfield) announces today that the state Department of Fire Services awarded $31,684 in FY 2015 Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) grant monies and $29,960 in FY 2015 Senior SAFE program grant monies to eight fire departments within his Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin & Hampden District.

The SAFE Program provides resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs with children in grades K-12. The mission is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire, and more specifically, the fire hazards tobacco products pose.  Created by the Legislature twenty years ago, it has helped reduce annual child fire deaths by 72%.

The Senior SAFE Program offers funds to local communities to support of senior fire prevention training.  Seniors are a vulnerable population at risk of fire related deaths.  The Senior SAFE initiative educates seniors on fire prevention, general home safety and how to be better prepared in the event of a fire.
