LEE - Monday, June 9, 2014 - Governor Deval Patrick today joined Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Highway Division Administrator Frank DePaola, state and local officials and business leaders to break ground on the reconstruction of Tyringham Road in Lee. The project will rebuild two miles of Tyringham Road from the Tyringham town line to Route 102 and will unleash economic opportunities for Lee and the surrounding communities.
“We are committed to investing in transportation improvements to create growth throughout the Commonwealth,” said Governor Patrick. “Tyringham Road is an excellent example of this commitment and will benefit area residents and visitors for years to come.”
Advancing this project has been a collaborative effort between MassDOT and the community of Lee; Lee funded the design portion of the project. The work includes widening the roadway and adding new retaining walls, guardrails and traffic controls along with drainage improvements. The $4.4 million project also includes reconstruction of the intersection of Tyringham Road and Meadow Street. MassDOT issued the notice to proceed with the project following the passage of the Transportation Bond Bill in April. Construction work is now underway with completion scheduled for spring 2016.
“These long-awaited improvements in Lee will provide better access to dozens of area businesses and connect commuters to the Massachusetts Turnpike,” said Administrator DePaola. “This is just one of many projects statewide that will enhance safe travel on our roads and bridges.”
“It is wonderful to celebrate the beginning of this much anticipated project today,” said Senator Benjamin B. Downing. “This reconstruction effort represents a successful partnership between state and local officials, and once complete, all drivers and passengers on this stretch of Tyringham Road will benefit from a safer roadway.”
“This project has been a longtime coming for this highly traveled road and is very welcome news,” said Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli. “Tyringham Road is a main connector road and is used by a great many people and I'm so pleased that the work is finally beginning.”
