Pittsfield - Today State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) and State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli (D-Lenox) announce that the Town of Lee is receiving downtown technical assistance through the Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) Massachusetts Downtown Initiative (MDI). This program provides communities with targeted assistance to facilitate successful, long-term downtown revitalization.
“The goal of this technical assistance is to identify and overcome barriers to Lee’s downtown revitalization efforts,” remarked Downing. “Addressing the lack of sufficient parking and examining options for redeveloping the Bookless Block is a great step forward in creating an economically viable town center.”
MDI has hired Steve Cecil, of The Cecil Group, Inc., to work with Lee and the Downtown Revitalization Taskforce to make recommendations concerning parking in the target area of Lee’s town center as well as recommendations for key redevelopment options for the Bookless Block which houses vacant ground-level retail space. The Cecil Group, Inc. will evaluate the downtown parking issues and examine the physical capacity of the Bookless Block located between Main Street, Franklin Street, High Street and Park Street to accommodate parking options.
“This is an exciting opportunity in the redevelopment of downtown Lee. This assistance will go a long way to make the Town of Lee’s efforts materialize,” stated Pignatelli.
Any community with a population of less than 50,000 residents is eligible to apply for this technical assistance. For more information, contact DHCD’s Division of Community Services at (617) 573-1400 or visit them on the web at www.mass.gov/dhcd.
