Pittsfield – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) will convene his July Coffee & Conversation public forum in the Town of Mount Washington next Monday, July 9, 2012. Join him at Mount Washington Town Hall, located at 118 East Street, from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
All are welcome to meet with the Senator and his district staff to pose a question, submit a comment or pitch an idea regarding state government. Downing will provide free coffee and refreshments to those interested in conversing with their State Senator face-to-face.
July’s Coffee & Conversation will also feature a Flag Presentation Ceremony. In 2011 Downing was approached by the Superintendent of the Bureau of State Office Buildings (BSB), seeking assistance in collecting a town flag from the 18 communities within his Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin District who were not represented in the State House’s Great Hall of Flags.
The Great Hall of Flags serves as the largest function room in the Massachusetts State House. In 1992, BSB began collecting official flags from the 351 Commonwealth communities and hanging them throughout the Great Hall in order to improve the acoustics of the room.
Downing wrote to officials in those 18 municipalities, encouraging them to create a town flag so they too could be represented in the State House. Mount Washington has since adopted a town flag and will present it to Senator Downing on the 9th, after which it will be raised at Town Hall.
Downing will transport Mount Washington’s new flag to the State House and present it to BSB officials. Once properly cataloged by state officials, it will be added to the impressive display of community flags in the Great Hall to be admired by all State House visitors.
Senator Downing hosts 10 Coffee & Conversation events in rotating towns across his Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin Senate District throughout the year; no public forum will be held during the month of August.
