BOSTON – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D- Pittsfield) hosted state Public Safety Secretary Mary Elizabeth Heffernan in Pittsfield today for a half day of meetings and briefings throughout the City.
The Senator and Secretary began their day in the office of Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless who, with State Police Lt. Brian Foley, provided a briefing on the mission and success of the Berkshire County Drug Task Force. This was followed by a regional conversation on crime prevention initiatives at Pittsfield City Hall -- participants included the Secretary, the Berkshire legislative delegation, District Attorney Capeless, Berkshire Sheriff Thomas Bowler, Pittsfield Mayor Daniel Bianchi, Pittsfield Police Chief Michael Wynn, North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright and North Adams Public Safety Commissioner John Morocco.
Downing and Secretary Heffernan’s third event was at Barrington Stage Company (BSC), a meeting with Artistic Director Julianne Boyd to receive a briefing on BSC’s innovative Playwright Mentoring Project, an intensive, six-month, out-of-school activity that uses theatre as a catalyst to help at-risk youth learn valuable life skills that will aid them in developing positive self-images. Over the course of the program teens are enabled to create an original performance piece based on their own stories in a safe and confidential environment where they can express themselves, develop conflict/resolution skills and help to create a supportive community.
