BOSTON – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D – Pittsfield) today announced that the Massachusetts Senate has endorsed a Resolution recognizing the week of May 19-25, 2007 as National Safe Boating Week.
“The cities and towns in Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin Counties host many lakes, ponds, rivers and streams which draw hundreds of people for recreational boating, swimming and fishing each season,” said Downing. “Massachusetts’ water resources attract tourism and provide destinations for wonderful outdoor activities. As the summer season approaches, I hope we will all be cognizant of safety measures that should be in place while enjoying the waters. In particular, boaters should be sure to have their life jackets in place when they take to the water.”
Established by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the purpose of National Safe Boating Week is to highlight and initiate year-round efforts to promote safe boating practices. To encourage the use of life jackets, the North America Safe Boating Campaign has adopted the theme of “Wear It” for this year’s Safe Boating Week.
