Boston – Yesterday, under the leadership of State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D- Pittsfield), the Massachusetts Senate gave preliminary approval to H. 3509, An Act authorizing the town of Becket to continue the employment of the Chief of Police, William Elovirta.
H. 3509, a home rule petition approved by the voters of Becket during Town Meeting on May 14, 2011, was sponsored jointly by Downing and State Representative Paul W. Mark (D- Peru). The legislation authorizes Chief Elovirta to continue working in his position until the end of this fiscal year, June 30, 2012.
Chief Elovirta, 69, is a 32-year veteran of the Becket Police Department, and has served the community as part-time chief for 22 years.
The legislation must obtain final enactment by both the House of Representatives and the Senate before it can be forwarded to the Governor for his review and approval.
