Stockbridge – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D – Pittsfield) announced today that IS 183 Art School of the Berkshires has been awarded an emergency grant from the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund in the amount of $50,000. The Fund is administered by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, William F. Galvin.
This emergency grant will assist IS 183 with critical exterior repairs needed at Citizen’s Hall, such as addressing roof replacement and major carpentry to framing, sheathing, dormers, windows and doors. Citizen’s Hall is one of the oldest public buildings in the hamlet of Interlaken and is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
“IS 183’s commitment to the historic preservation of this structure will ensure Citizen’s Hall’s availability to serve future students as well as the community of Stockbridge for generations,” said Downing. “I am so pleased that the Secretary was able to grant these emergency funds to assist with these desperately needed capital repairs. I look forward to the complete restoration of this community treasure.”
IS 183 Art School of the Berkshires, a community-based art school, was founded in 1991. Citizen’s Hall accommodates a range of studio facilities and public meeting space as well as an exhibition hall. IS 183 offers classes throughout the year in ceramics, painting and drawing, and three dimensional arts for children and adults at all levels.
