Chestnut Hill, MA - The College Democrats of Boston College (CDBC) is pleased to announce that the 2011 recipient of the Fr. Robert F. Drinan Award will be Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, A&S ‘77. The 2011 recipient of the Democratic Rising Star Award will be Massachusetts State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D - Pittsfield). Both awards will be presented at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:00 p.m. in Lyons Dining Hall at Boston College.
First presented in 2007, the Father Robert F. Drinan Award is presented to a prominent Catholic Democrat who exemplifies Father Drinan’s commitment to public service and social justice. Father Drinan, who passed away in 2007, was a former Dean of the Boston College Law School and Democratic member of Congress. Father Drinan was forced to give up his seat in 1980 when Pope John Paul II mandated that priests withdraw from electoral politics. Past recipients of the Father Robert F. Drinan Award include Senator John Kerry, Donna Brazile, and Mass. Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray.
“Governor Malloy has a long history of public service. During his tenure as mayor of Stamford, he transformed the city, making it one of our nation’s most livable cities. Since taking office, Governor Malloy has committed himself to solving the state’s budget situation while preserving the safety net that is so important for many Americans. He is the perfect recipient for this year’s award,” said Kristoffer Munden, A&S ‘11 and President of CDBC.
“BC provided a great learning environment and opportunity to pursue a number of political and leadership activities,” Governor Malloy said. “It is a privilege to be asked to return and receive an award named in honor of Father Drinan, from whom I learned an incredible amount about public service and for whom I continue to have great admiration and respect. I look forward to returning to campus and seeing old friends and new faces at the CDBC ceremony in April.”
The Democratic Rising Star award was first presented in 2010 to Newton Mayor Setti Warren, A&S ‘93. The award is presented to a Massachusetts Democrat who demonstrates the ideals of the Democratic Party and who has the potential to accomplish even greater things in his or her career. This year’s recipient, State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D - Pittsfield), represents the 48 western Massachusetts communities of the Berkshire, Hampshire and Franklin District and also serves as the Honorary Chairman of the College Democrats of Massachusetts.
“Sen. Downing is an ideal recipient for this award because of his work on behalf of college students,” said Nick Doffek, A&S ‘13 and Vice President of CDBC.
"I'm humbled to be honored with this award and thankful to the College Democrats of Boston College who have done such good work to get voters of all ages, especially college students, engaged in and excited about the political process in Massachusetts," said Senator Downing.
Additional details about the award ceremony will be released in the coming weeks.
