PRESS RELEASE - Revenue Committee "Listening Tour" Visits Worcester
October 06, 2009

Committee to Focus on State Tax Policy and the
Challenges of Local Government
BOSTON – The Joint Committee on Revenue is traveling across the Commonwealth on a “Listening Tour” to solicit public comment on state tax policy, beginning Wednesday, October 7, 2009 from 4pm to 6pm at the Academy at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (85 Prescott Street, Worcester).
During the Worcester session, the Committee focus is on how state tax policies affect local government.   Co-Chairmen Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) and Representative Jay R. Kaufman (D-Lexington) will facilitate audience discussion and questions following a brief overview of the topic given by Geoff Beckwith, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Municipal Association.
During the Listening Tour, the Committee will visit different regions of Massachusetts; each session will focus on the impact of various tax policies.  Each stop will begin with a brief snapshot of the current revenue picture in Massachusetts. These events are open to the public for their participation.
“The implementation of state tax policy affects every Massachusetts resident,” noted Downing. “The information gathered at these regional forums will be invaluable to the Committee as we continue to consider and deliberate on initiatives before us.”
“In these tough economic times state and local revenues have been severely strained. By holding these public forums we as lawmakers are able to hear directly from the public their concerns regarding   various tax policies. It is critical  to evaluate these policies and address local revenue concerns together as a community. As we strive to maintain adequate levels of services for those most in need, we must take a hard look at the structure of our tax policy to better evaluate its long-term sufficiency,” said Kaufman.
The Revenue Committee Listening Tour agenda is below; contact the Committee for further information:
·         Framingham, October 13th (Seniors, Veterans and Vulnerable Populations)
·         Pittsfield, October 21st (Economic Development and Main Street)
·         Fall River, October 28th (Property Tax)
·         Cambridge, November 5th (Working Families)
