PRESS RELEASE - Downing Announces Cleanup Grants for Pittsfield, Wiliamstown
July 20, 2009

BOSTON – State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) announces grants awarded by the Department of Revenue from the Underground Storage Tank Petroleum Product Cleanup Fund to Pittsfield and Williamstown.

Established in 1991 by Massachusetts General Law Chapter 21J, the Massachusetts Underground Storage Tank Program provides partial reimbursement to owners and operators of underground storage tank dispensing facilities for costs they incur in remediating environmental releases.

“Pittsfield and Williamstown are responsible caretakers of these underground oil storage facilities. These grants reimburse the communities for their careful environmental stewardship at a time when municipal budgets are stretched to the limit,” said Downing.

DOR granted $2,334.50 to the City of Pittsfield and $2,687.50 to Williamstown.

In Pittsfield, two underground storage tanks were removed from the Old Morningside Firehouse, located at 235 Tyler Street.  “I would like to thank Senator Downing for his continued support in the City of Pittsfield and his concern for protecting the environment,” said Mayor James M. Ruberto.  “With the grants we were able to remove the tanks safely and properly.  The Department of Community Development is currently in the planning process for the property’s potential productive reuse.”

Williamstown’s award partially reimburses the community for costs associated with the removal of an underground heating oil storage tank located outside of the Lil’ Red Schoolhouse. The school’s heating system now draws oil from new tanks installed in the basement of the building.

“All the credit in Williamstown goes to Facilities Superintendent Chris LeMoine for his conscientious management of town facilities and his concern for the taxpayers’ dollars,” said Peter L. Fohlin, Town Manager.
