PRESS RELEASE- Downing Announces Funding for Summer Nutrition Program: Project Bread Awards $4,575 to Pittsfield and Cheshire Food Service Programs
June 19, 2009

Pittsfield- State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) is pleased to announce several local grants totaling $4,575 from Project Bread’s Summer Food Service Program.
Local award recipients are the Pittsfield YMCA: $2,000; Pittsfield School Food Services: $1,300; First United Methodist Church: $675; and the Adams Cheshire Regional Schools: $600. These funds help to increase the number of children who receive a healthy, free meal in the summer months when school is not in session.
“I am pleased that Project Bread has selected organizations in high-risk communities to receive funding for nutritious meals for children,” said Downing. “We must work hard to protect our most vulnerable populations and ensure the provision of one of our most basic needs- healthy food.”
These grants through Project Bread help to leverage federal dollars for communities in need by increasing participation in federally reimbursed food programs. In these challenging economic times, federal nutrition programs play an important role in protecting children from hunger. Project Bread’s grants will enable these organizations to feed more children this summer, ensuring kids return to school in the fall ready to learn.
