PRESS RELEASE- Downing Announces MTC Renewable Energy Grants for Adams & Cheshire: Solar-Powered Illumination Systems will be Installed to Showcase Town Memorials
September 18, 2008

Pittsfield- State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) announced today that the Towns of Adams and Cheshire have been selected to participate in the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s (MTC) solar-powered lighting system program. Due to these grants solar-power lighting systems will illuminate Adams’ Veteran’s Memorial Monument at Town Hall and Cheshire’s flagpole next to the War Memorial at Town Hall.

“There are so many ways that we can incorporate renewable energy options into everyday life,” said Downing.  “By selecting these two locations, MTC will simultaneously showcase the viability of solar power while using renewable energy to call the public’s attention to these monuments. I am pleased locations in Adams and Cheshire were chosen to participate in this program - the more we highlight renewable energy initiatives the faster they become recognized as affordable, mainstream options.”

These solar-powered lighting systems have been made possible through a grant from the MTC’s Renewable Energy Trust Fund.  Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #7 have donated their time to install the systems.

The intent of these awards is to showcase and promote clean renewable solar energy, while assisting cities in their municipal beautification efforts.  The solar-powered lighting systems are fabricated in Framingham by SolarOne Solutions.  Systems are programmed to provide 7 hours of peak lighting and the rest of the night the lights will dim to 30% of the peak lighting, with 6 hours of post-dusk and 1 hour of pre-dawn lighting.
