PRESS RELEASE- Downing Joins Colleagues in Commemorating Chanukah December 03, 2007
Boston-State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) has joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring a Joint Resolution of the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives which commemorates the celebration of Chanukah, the Jewish festival of lights and rededication.
The State House’s traditional 15-foot Chanukah Menorah goes bright this week, with a State House ceremony that is expected to draw many leaders in state government including Lt. Governor Timothy Murray, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, Senate President Therese Murray, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Secretary of State William Galvin, Treasurer Timothy Cahill, Auditor Joseph DeNucci, Mayor Thomas Menino, and Rabbi Rachmiel Liberman of the Congregation Lubavitch Jewish Educational Center.
The celebration will begin at on Tuesday, December 4th, the first day of Chanukah, in Nurses Hall of the State House.

RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE CELEBRATION OF CHANUKAH
WHEREAS, THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF CHANUKAH WILL BE CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD FROM THE EVENING OF DECEMBER FOURTH TWO THOUSAND SEVEN THROUGH DECEMBER TWELFTH IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND SEVEN; AND
WHEREAS, THE CELEBRATION OF CHANUKAH COMMEMORATES THE SPLENDID VICTORY OF A SMALL ARMY WHICH, ALTHOUGH GREATLY OUTNUMBERD, PREVAILED AGAINST THE FORCES OF RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION; AND
WHEREAS, A GREAT MIRACLE FOLLOWED THIS VICTORY WHEN A SMALL JAR WITH ONLY ENOUGH OIL TO BURN A SINGLE DAYLIT THE MENORAH FOR EIGHT DAYS, BRINGING JOY TO ALL WHO HAD FOUGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO TEACH AND WORSHIP FREELY; AND
WHEREAS, THE MIRACLE OF LIGHT IS PRESERVED AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH THE LIGHTING OF THE MENORAH, SYMBOLIZING THE IDEAL OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND OFFERING A BEACON OF HOPE TO ALL THOSE STILL SUBJECT TO SPIRITUAL OPPRESSION; AND
WHEREAS, RABBI RACHMIEL LIBERMAN, LEADER OF CONGREGATION LUBAVITCH AND DIRECTOR OF THE JEWISH EDUCATIONAL CENTER OF MASSACHUSETTS, SHARES THE JOY OF LIGHT WITH ALL CITIZENS OF THE COMMONWEALTH BY ANNUALLY KINDLING A MENORAH IN DOWNTOWN BOSTON; AND
WHEREAS, THE ANNUAL LIGHTING OF THE MENORAH IN BOSTON CONFIRMS THE FAITH OF ALL PEOPLE IN THE UNIVERSAL RIGHT TO RELIGIOUS EXPRESSION AND SPIRITUAL FREEDOM IN THE COMMONWEALTH AND AROUND THE GLOBE; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED, THAT THE MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATURE HEREBY JOINS WITH PEOPLE EVERYWHERE IN THE CELEBRATION OF CHANUKAH AND URGES CITIZENS OF THE COMMONWEALTH TO ATTEND THE ANNUAL LIGHTING OF THE MENORAH; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED, THAT A COPY OF THESE RESOLUTIONS BE TRANSMITTED FORTHWITH BY THE CLERK OF THE SENATE TO RABBI RACHMIEL LIBERMAN.
