PRESS RELEASE- Downing Announces Reimbursements for Local Trails: Trails in Windsor and Great Barrington to receive reimbursements from DCR
November 02, 2007

Pittsfield- Today State Senator Benjamin B. Downing (D-Pittsfield) announced that The Trustees of Reservations in Windsor and the Great Barrington Land Conservancy’s Lake Mansfield’s Alliance have been selected to receive grant funding through the Recreational Trails Program from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).  In all, 117 grant applications were submitted with a total ask of $3.7 million.  After careful review, 37 projects totaling $783,000 were chosen for funding.

“We are lucky to live in a part of the state where nature’s beauty takes center stage.  Places like The Trustees of Reservations and the Lake Mansfield Alliance provide trails and access to outdoor recreation for locals and visitors to enjoy.  I am pleased that DCR continues to invest in our trail systems through the Recreational Trails Program.”

The Trustees of Reservations: Notchview Trail, Windsor: $20,000

This project will improve drainage issues and trail surface within the Notchview Trail 40km system.  The work will increase trail access throughout the year by solving design problems and accommodating increased public demand.

Lake Mansfield Alliance: Great Barrington Land Conservancy: $8,000

This project will support the redesign and development of trails in a 29 acre forest within the Great Barrington Land Conservancy.  These revised trails will provide pedestrian access from neighborhood areas and downtown to an important natural and recreational resource, Lake Mansfield beach and park.  The project will bring together several community organizations working to establish a network of pedestrian trails and walks.

The Recreational Trails Program is part of a national program which is funded through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that allocates funds to each state for the development and preservation of recreational trails and trail-related facilities.  In Massachusetts, funds are administered by DCR in partnership with the Massachusetts Recreational Trails Advisory Board and the Executive Office of Transportation (EOT).

Recreational Trails Grants are challenge grants that reimburse 80% of project costs for a variety of trail preservation, construction and stewardship projects across the Commonwealth.  Selected projects must center on recreational activity rather than transportation.   Priority is given to projects improving existing trail improvements, which protect or enhance the site’s natural and cultural resources, and link individuals and communities to these resources.

Recreational Trails Grants are awarded annually with applications due in the beginning of October.  Eligible applicants include all state, regional, municipal and some federal government agencies, as well as non-profit organizations.  For additional information on Recreational Trail grants and to download application forms, please visit: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/stewardship/greenway/regionalGrants.htm
